HILDEGARD is an 8-part premiere global market limited television series (in the vein of Game of Thrones, Borgias, The Vikings…) bringing to life the extraordinary true story of Hildegard von Bingen—a 12th-century Benedictine abbess, mystic, polymath, composer, healer, artist, and visionary whose work continues to resonate nearly a thousand years later. Born into a world that silenced women, Hildegard dared to speak the unspeakable, share her visions, and compose music that carried divine wisdom into the hearts of her time and beyond.

HILDEGARD offers a story that is both ancient and radically current: a woman reclaiming her voice, her spiritual authority, and her creative power in a world that told her to be small.
HILDEGARD is being developed by Viriditas Productions LLC, a creative collaboration founded by three visionary women producers, writers, and actresses — Michelle Barton, Kate McCallum, and Karen Strassman.
Inspired by Mary Sharratt’s acclaimed novel Illuminations and an original screenplay by Kate McCallum and Stephanie Meyer, the series will transmit the extraordinary message that is Hildegard’s message and mythic life. She is a timeless beacon for empowerment. Hildegard inspires “Viriditas,” as she defines it as “the greening of one’s Soul” through the Living Light, radical creativity, and spiritual aliveness. She is a timeless beacon for diplomatic acumen, expansive spirituality, natural healing arts, and music composition. And in her later years, she was a passionate activist who spoke out against corruption and injustice within the church and the state, urging the compassionate care for all humanity in alignment with the “living light” within us all.
The 90’s: Kate McCallum and Stephanie Meyer were emblazoned by the life of Hildegard and co-wrote a feature film script while working in the feature film department at Universal Studios. 2014: Kate shared the screenplay with actress and budding producer, Michelle Barton who fell in love with Hildegard — but being that this would’ve been her first project and it needed to be filmed in Europe — she instinctively and wisely claimed, “This is 10 years down the line…”
2021: Over tea and passionate sharing, Michelle and actress Karen Strassman realized they had a call to create together. In the that fortuitous meeting, Karen declared she’d always wanted to tell the story of a woman named Hildegard von Bingen. Michelle, conveniently still had that script in her back pocket.
2022-2023: Michelle, Karen and Kate held their first meeting in the Spring of 2022 and moved into full on development; investing their time, money and magic into this series that is now ready to blossom.
2023-2025: The producers Nicolas Levis, Malte Roesner, and acclaimed director, writer and producer, Claire McCarthy joined the project.
2026-on: Our team is steadfast in envisioning and committed to begin production in the Fall. Perhaps beginning on September 17, Saint Hildegard’s Feast Day!
As this project is truly a women’s empowerment story (and men’s) our goal is to honor all donors by adding their names to credits of the project with a vision of “A Million Women” named.***
