Participants in the Global Arts and Media Node are futurist oriented artists, media makers, communicators, educators and consultants who are dedicated to utilizing the power of arts and media to create a better world. They are committed to keeping up on future trends in their respective fields of expertise and are helping to create and promote the Millennium Project’s 15 Global Challenges and solutions in their work. The Node strives to include Members and International Representatives from around the world and as additional participants join these efforts they will be posted here throughout the coming year.
JEROME C. GLENN
Jerome Glenn is co-founder and director of The Millennium Project and co-author with Ted Gordon of its annual State of the Future report since 1997. He was the Washington, DC representative for the United Nations University as executive director of the American Council for the UNU 1988-2007. He has over 35 years of Futures Research experience working for governments, international organizations, and private industry in Science & Technology Policy, Environmental Security, Economics, Education, Defense, Space, Futures Research Methodology, International Telecommunications, and Decision Support Systems with the Committee for the Future, Hudson Institute, Future Options Room, and the Millennium Project. He has addressed or keynoted conferences for over 300 government departments, universities, NGOs, UN organizations, and/or corporations around the world on a variety of future-oriented topics.

Chair: Kate McCallum, United Sates
Kate McCallum is the Founder and President of c3: Center for Conscious Creativity, Executive Director c3: VisionLAB and Founder/President Bridge Arts Media LLC, Los Angeles, California. She brings over 30 years of professional experience in the creation of arts and media. McCallum spent 20 years working with some of the world’s top creatives on feature films and primetime American television shows at Universal Studios such as Miami Vice, Law & Order, Human Factor, and Equalizer, to name a few. In addition, she produced a TV movie for NBC and served as a VP of Creative for several years through Paramount Studios.
Kate published a column for scr(i)pt magazine called The Great Idea which tracked the creative process from concept to screen through the writer’s perspective of a variety of different media formats and has developed and co-written several screenplays, television projects and magazine articles. She was VP of Programming at Harmony Channel, a cutting-edge innovative VoD channel on Comcast featuring a unique array of visual music and then served in arts administration for 2.5 years as the Board Liaison and Executive Administrator to Placido Domingo at LA Opera.
McCallum was recently appointed as a Fellow to the Society of New Communications Research and holds an MA degree in Consciousness Studies from the University of Philosophical Research in Los Angeles, California. She is a member of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, the Producers Guild of America, the World Future Studies Federation, and the Association for the Scientific Study of Consciousness.
McCallum’s Bridge Arts Media, LLC is a transmedia company through which she has launched an arts and music label, a boutique publishing line, and traditional and new media projects. The c3 has been in existence since 2005 and was recently granted a scholarship from the Ahmanson Foundation through the Executive Services Corp of Southern California.

Kwon is the President and Founder of Fourthirtythree Inc., former CEO of Nexon, Inc. (the largest on-line computer gaming company in Asia), former CEO of Nexon Mobile, Inc. (the largest mobile game company in Korea), former Chairman of Korea Association of Game Industry, former Professor in Psychology, Kyunghee University.
c3 CreateLAB Node Contributor: Dr. Veera Asher, United States and Canada
Veera Asher has her Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Voice Performance as well has her Pilates Instructor Certification. The title of her Doctoral Dissertation: “Integrating Pilates Training into the Voice Studio.” Veera serves as the Executive Director and Artistic Director of the c3: Center for Conscious Creativity’s c3: CreateLAB — a platform for the development of experimental works in the performing and expressive arts driven by innovation and emerging technologies.
c3 MindLAB Node Contributor: Dr. Dana Klisanin, United States
Dr. Dana Kisanin serves as Executive Director of the MindLAB. Dana is an integral psychologist pioneering the field of (EGM) Evolutionary Guidance Media. The objective of her transdisciplinary research is to explore the transformative potential of new media. Her work is designed to provide media creators with a palette through which they can facilitate the societal emergence of planetary consciousness.
Her background includes starting and running integral businesses, writing and teaching about transformative practices, and consulting with corporations on integral wellness practices. She has established the Evolutionary Guidance Media Research Group and is currently working on several multimedia projects, most notably Project Milky Way – an experimental story, film, and gaming system utilizing the evolutionary guidance media framework.
c3: VisionLAB Transmedia Consultant: Kirsten Carthew, United States and Canada
Kirsten Carthew has worked as a writer, director and producer in web, radio, television and film in the US, Canada, and the UAE (Dubai). Her work has earned recognition from various organizations and lead to consulting work with corporations as diverse as Honeywell Inc. and Random House Publishing, UK. She holds a MSc from the London School of Economics and an MA from the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Southern California where she worked as a Teacher’s Assistant in transmedia storytelling for Henry Jenkins, “The Marshall McLuhan of the 21st Century.” Her research expertise focuses on audience engagement, new media literacies, strategies for on-line persuasion, and transmedia storytelling. In 2007 she co-founded a not-for-profit program for arctic youth focused on leadership and outdoor education. In addition to multi-media projects and consulting work, Kirsten is currently producing a documentary on re-imagineering learning in the 21st century. In March, 2011 she will give a TEDx Arctic talk on “a new media definition of literacy.” Kirsten continues to be involved with PLAY (Participatory Learning and You) as part of the New Media Literacies Lab at the Annenberg School for Communication.
Sandra de Castro Buffington, United States
Sandra de Castro Buffington is director of Hollywood, Health & Society (HH&S), a program of the USC Annenberg Norman Lear Center that harnesses the power of entertainment media to improve the health and well being of people worldwide. She provides Hollywood’s writers and producers with access to public health experts for their scripts for television, film and new media. The program recognizes the profound impact that entertainment media have on individual knowledge and behavior, and celebrates exemplary TV health storylines at the annual Sentinel Health Awards ceremony at the Writers Guild of America West.
Sandra is known for her award-winning work in global health, entertainment education and social transformation. She has nearly 30 years of experience working in global leadership, public health and emergence technologies; 20 years were spent working internationally, and five of those years were spent in residence overseas.
Sandra is working in collaboration with Hollywood’s creative community and global partners to establish a network of Centers for Entertainment Education in the major media markets that serve the developing world. The Centers will provide writers and producers worldwide with access to experts to increase the accuracy of health, conflict transformation and climate change portrayals in their scripts.
Marco Bevolo, Netherlands
Marco Bevolo was born on the same day as W.A. Mozart, only a few years after. Until 2009 he was a Director at Philips Design headquarters in the Netherlands, where he was the driving force behind CultureScan, the cultural futures research program. He primarily works in the areas of strategic design, people research and thought leadership. He graduated in Psychology of Communication from the University of Turin. Bevolo started his professional career at Italdesign Giugiaro in 1990. Prior to joining Philips Design, his work focused mainly on automotive design, publishing and marketing communication. He was Editor in Chief for Intervista, an Italian lifestyle editorial spin off from Flash Art. Bevolo worked as copywriter with Armando Testa for clients like P&G and Bolton, joining Euro RSCG in 1998. He moved to the Netherlands in 1999 with his Japanese spouse, Keiko.
Bevolo was the editor and co-author of “City.People.Light”, an anthology of world class urban futures concepts (2007) and he has had work published in the groundbreaking “The New Everyday” by 010, Rotterdam (2004), in the Italian book Nuova Enciclopedia della Comunicazione, as well as in the renowned Japanese design magazine Axis and in the Design Management Review of Boston. He was interviewed on cultural futures, trends and branding by the Korean national TV, Repubblica, ViewPoint, Der Spiegel and Marketing Tijdschrift. He lectured at the Temasek Polytechnic of Singapore, at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, and as module coordinator of the Master of Arts in Design Management at INHOLLAND of Rotterdam. He has been regularly invited as speaker and chairman at leading events by Premsela , the Dutch Design Foundation. ESOMAR, ENG and DMI. He has been an advisory board member of the Istituto Internazionale Studi sul Futurismo of Milan and Basel, of Platform 21 of Amsterdam and of Stichting Caramundo in Amsterdam and Rio de Janeiro.
LeVar Burton, United States
Actor, director and author LeVar Burton first came to prominence portrayingKunta Kinte in the 1977 award-winning ABC television miniseries ROOTS, based on the novel by Alex Haley. He is also widely known for his portrayal of Geordi La Forge on the syndicated science fiction series STAR TREK: The Next Generation and as the host of the PBS children’s series READING RAINBOW.
Brendan Harkin, Australia
Brendan Harkin is the Founder and Director of XMediaLab. He founded XMediaLab in June 2003. XMediaLab is the internationally acclaimed creative thinktank for digital media professionals that brings together the world’s outstanding creatives, executives, and power-brokers who work as mentors with local companies on their own creative project ideas.
XMediaLab focuses on creating high-value networks among the emergent digital media markets of China, India, the Middle East, and North and South Asia; and assisting local companies get their ideas successfully to market by involving them directly with the world’s leading digital media practitioners.
Brendan has held a number of high profile positions in new media industry development: founding the first Asia Pacific Multimedia Festival; and as Australia’s first General Manager for Public Awareness at the National Office for the Information Economy (NOIE) and was awarded an “Australia Day National Gold Medal” by the Australian Government for his services.
Klaus Haasis, Germany
Klaus Haasis was appointed founding CEO of MFG Public Innovation Agency for ICT, Creative Industries, Media and Film in 1995, a position he holds to this day. He is known as innovation manager, communication architect and creative coach. With degrees in Media Engineering and Communication Science/Journalism Haasis is qualified with a vast professional experience in designing innovation systems and communication processes for more than 35 years. He held jobs in the creative industries, ICT, the chemical and pharmaceutical industry and the public sector. Haasis’ professional career began in 1975 in the printing and media industry as a manager after successfully completing apprenticeships in photography and advertising. In 1983 he established the implementation of new media at Hoechst AG, one of the biggest chemical companies in the world. From 1990 on he set up one of the first regional TV stations for German Broadcaster SAT.1 as a founding CEO.
Haasis studied at the Media University of Stuttgart and the University of Hohenheim, where he worked as a researcher for an “Enquete of the German Bundesregierung” on the change process of journalism in Eastern and Western Germany after the fall of the Berlin Wall. He held lectures at various universities and published on digital value creation and technological roadmapping for ICT and creative industries. As a media pioneer Haasis was part of the first wave of digitalization in the printing industry in the seventies, he designed the first business applications for German online service Bildschirmtext and introduced computer animation to German industrial film in the early eighties. He developed new formats and production methods for regional TV in the beginning of the nineties. In the early 2000s he was a counsellor to policy makers regarding the founding of the University for Popular Music and Music Business in Mannheim and the merge of the Universities for Media and Library Science in Stuttgart.
Haasis was quick to recognize the importance of regional innovation systems in the middle of the nineties by establishing first cluster initiatives and communities. Today he is one of the most experienced cluster and innovation managers in Europe in the creative sector. Since 1997 he is also founding CEO of the business network Baden-Württemberg: Connected, awarded 2008 as the best German competence network. Since 2008 he is an honorary member of the Board of Directors of TCI, the global practitioners’ network for competitiveness, clusters and innovation in. In 2009 Haasis was one of the hosts of the Creativity World Forum in Stuttgart. He is a member of the jury of a public digital content funding programme and the Karl-Steinbuch-Scholarship of the MFG Foundation.
Currently educated as a person-centred counsellor he is providing personalised and group coaching to creative young talents, scientists, innovative entrepreneurs, cluster managers and policy makers. In October 2011 he will start lecturing on Creative Industries at the University of Popular Music and Music Business in Mannheim.
Ed Lantz, United States
Founding Director, IMERSA; President & CTO, Vortex Immersion Media, Ed Lantz is a media and entertainment engineer, inventor, scientist, artist and entrepreneur. He is internationally recognized as a pioneer and leading authority in large-format digital cinema and immersive experiences for mass audiences, and continues to nurture the development of the “fulldome” medium which has surpassed IMAX’s installed theater base by replacing film and analog star projectors with large-format interactive computer graphics projected onto domed screens. Other areas of expertise include cable television, themed entertainment, photonics, virtual reality, events production, 3D animation and special effects for large-format film and video. Entrepreneurial activities include advanced digital mass media and e-commerce systems, interactive television, immersive video and film production, interactive place-based entertainment, real-time video/music performance, independent films with socially conscious themes, fine art visual music, and wellness applications exploiting the psychophysical effects of interactive digital media.
Dongchang Liu, China
Liu dongchang is a famous cultural scholar, writer and senior journalist in China , working at CNC network in Xinhua News Agency. Liu is also the executive dean of National Institute of Soft Power, Peking University, the research arm of Beijing Soft Technology Institute.
Liu graduated from the Department of Chinese, Hebei University in 1983. He further studied at Academy of Chinese Culture in Peking University (majored in comparative culture between China and Western countries) in 1988,and later he receivecd his post-graduate MBA from Tianjin College of Finance.
Liu is the Founder of several media companies in China. He was chief editor ofCharacter Weekly, assistant-chief editor of Public Reading and National Situation Report, and executive editor of Legal Digest. Now he is committing the operation of the new media—Mobile TV.
Liu has taken part in research for many project groups organized by Peking University and the country of China. He continuously seeks conflicts and change in the culture between China and Western countries, and makes a thorough inquiry of perception and thought in the ties and correspondence of philosophy in east and west. He successively published Monographs: Chinese Culture to the World series, Culture—Walking between Tradition and Mordernity, Image Thinking and Literature, etc. Liu has won national and international awards many times. He was elected 2007 Ten Characters of Chinese Festival Theory.
Liu also wrote the novels Yi Ching City, Shimizu Zen. His suspense novels A Drop of Blood, Play Evil and Dark-red Tips, as best-sellers, were listed the Top Popular Novels by Sina.
Jennifer McClure, United States
Jen McClure is a communications professional with more than 25 years of experience in all facets of media and communications, and is a recognized expert in the field of social media and new communications. Her career includes work in journalism, market and media research, media relations, public relations, strategic communications, publishing and broadcast media.
She is the founder and president of the Society for New Communications Research, a global, nonprofit research and education foundation and think tank focused on the latest developments in new media and communications and their impact on business, culture and society, and co-founder of NewComm Forum, an annual conference focused on teaching organizations how to harness the power of the social web.
